In the escalating turmoil within the education department, on March 6th, the state department revealed “Catch and Revoke,” a strategy to employ AI in limiting the visas of pro-Hamas advocates expressing their views online. This plan has shocked many and, most importantly, raised many concerns about freedom of speech. However, the Trump administration believes this is justified as a result of the Hamas-led terrorist attack on Israel (list date). The consequences of this approach are worrisome not only due to its harshness but also because an AI can now assess an individual’s citizenship status.
The State Department, with assistance from AI, will review the social media accounts of students who voice or participate in pro-Hamas activities. State Senate Marco Rubio stated that โ the Trump administration has already gained infamy for the use of unregulated DOGE AI to cut a large number of federal jobs.
Trump’s administration has already been targeting the many public protests that have been occurring at universities. Former student Mahmad Khalil has been detained recently because of this strategy. As a result of Khalil’s online activities, Senator Marco Rubio confirmed that his โpresence or activities in the United States would have serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United Statesโ. Currently, Kahlil is still in detainment, leaving his eight-month pregnant life alone to deal with the doxxing and turmoil of the situation. President Trump has concluded this as a victory as he proclaims that he is the first of โmany to comeโ. Mahmad Khalil hasn’t put any U.S. citizen’s life at risk other than opposing the current national interests of President Trump and his backers.
On Tuesday morning, Rubio solidified his stance on this strategy, voicing, โI think being a supporter of Hamas and coming into our universities and turning them upside down, and being complicit and what are crimes of vandalization, complicit in shutting down learning institutions.โ Rubioโs statement infers he is in support of learning institutions. However, Trump’s disruption of the education department leaves the education system in America arguably damaged. Universities are known to encourage intellectual debate, and this can only flourish through freedom of speech.
